After Marvin had finally surprised everybody at home on Friday, I can write about it. It was nothing new for us, but nobody on here knows about it. Last month he decided to take his flight home in March and from now on, it will just be April and me.

To get the most common answers out of the way:

1. No I am not scared, I got tought to grow with the things that come up in life. (Not going to lie though, in the beginning I didn’t want to travel by myself because I was and got used to always having Marvin around)

2. Marvin didn’t come to the Bahamas with me, and April stayed with him during the time. Tatu was obviously Marvins sleeping place. Anyway, I had to have a flight back to Germany when I wanted to enter the Bahamas, which is why I am flying into Germany in June. (… only to explore Europe ;-))

3. Yes it was hard when I first found out about his plans, but it has been a week now and it was a super productive and self-learning week for me. I want to enjoy the time I have for myself and April as much as I can.

4. „What if…?“. Yes there is so many risks out there, and a girl out there by herself might seem more scary than a couple, but it is time to change that. I can’t go out everyday thinking something might happen. Here or in Germany. With that mindset, I would never leave my house…

5. No, Marvin and I did not break up. We’re looking forward to seeing each other in June again in Germany. <3

Das Geheimnis ist raus

Nachdem Marvin am Donnerstag alle überrascht hat, kann ich einen Blog dazu verfassen und alle anderen dürfen es jetzt endlich auch wissen. 😉 Marvin hat letzten Monat entschieden seinen Rückflug im März anzutreten, weshalb ihr ab jetzt nur noch von April und mir hier hören werdet.

Um die häufigsten Fragen direkt aus dem Weg zu räumen:

1. Nein ich habe keine Angst. Das wäre jetzt einfach die falsche Einstellung und meine Mama hat mir direkt gesagt, dass ich mit meinen Aufgaben wachsen werde. Natürlich war ich am Anfang unsicher (als ich es erfahren habe) und wollte sogar nicht alleine reisen und alles abbrechen. Aber jetzt nicht mehr. Ein Tipp: Keine Entscheidung in Emotionen zu treffen. 😉

2. Bilder von den Bahamas gibt es keine gemeinsamen, weil Marvin nicht ausgereist ist und auf April und Tatu aufgepasst hat, weswegen wir das Auto auch nirgendwo parken mussten. Trtz allem konnte ich nur mit einem Rückflug nach Deutschland auf die Bahamas einreisen, weshalb ich nun Anfang Juni auch (erstmal!) wieder in Deutschland sein werde.

3. Ja, am Anfang war es super schwer für mich, als er mir von seiner Entscheidung erzählt hat, aber jetzt schaue ich dem ganzen Positiv entgegen. Ich genieße die Zeit für mich (und April) und mache Alles, was ich ganz lange vor mir hergeschoben habe.

4. „Was ist wenn…?“ Ich bin der Meinung, dass das keine gesunde Einstellung ist. Natürlich bin ich mir den Risiken (in der heutigen Welt) bekannt und als Frau alleine ist es vielleicht etwas anderes als wenn man als Paar „auftritt“ aber dann dürfte man garnicht mehr vor die Tür gehen. Ich finde sowieso, dass dem ganzen ein Ende gesetzt werden sollte und das tun wir nicht indem wir uns verstecken. 😉

5. Nein, Marvin und ich haben uns nicht getrennt. Wir freuen uns auf Juni, wenn wir uns in Deutschland wiedersehen. <3

Wow! What a beautiful place! Getting out of the plane, I knew this was going to be wonderful. I don’t know why, but I just felt so comfortable from the very beginning on… I don’t want to say too much about it, but I’ll put pictures for you below, so you can see it.

Wow! Einfach nur unglaublich schön! Der erste Schritt hat sich für mich schon so angefühlt als wäre ich „angekommen“. Es war eine wunderschöne Zeit, mit gaaaaanz vielen Schritten und viel Entspannung. Einer meiner Lieblingsorte bis jetzt! Ich kann auch garnicht viel mehr dazu sagen, außer dass ihr einfach mal selber dorthin müsst. 😉

Clear blue / turquoise sea and sky (if you’re lucky). Now it feels like we’re on vacation, in very hot weather. The last days were already quiet rough on Marvin (heat wise), while I didn’t have any problems with it at all, but the first days on the keys, were a whole other level. Getting to Key West just felt special. Unfortunately, we decided to drive across the whole thing before we get out somewhere to figure out the cutest place and until we found one it was already “late” and none of us really wanted to go swimming anymore. For me, for some reason the water didn’t seem that appealing anyways, but Marvin was really looking forward to it. 

We went into a cute little restaurant that night, which made up for the non-swimming session. I was looking forward to snorkeling though and we were both interested in riding jet skiesor to go kayaking / canoeing (I still don’t know where the difference is really), but the second and third day were to rough to get on a boat and go out on the water or go snorkeling and jet skies are again – not allowed for private use, just for trips, which we didn’t want. They also have you take a test if you’re nor 30 years or older. It is like a license test. 

On the second day, Marvin found out about the Bahia Honda State Park, which is supposed to have the nicest beach. You do have to pay an entrance fee and (if you don’t pay for the campground) it is only open until the sun goes down. But, they do have sand beaches and showers, and everything is really clean. You can’t take the dog to the beaches, but everywhere else. They also have a (very over-prized) snack and souvenir shop. 

We went there on the second and third day and really enjoyed both days, even though the third day was really windy. It was also “BBQ-kick-off” day for us, with a one-time grill, and no matter how long it took Marvin to get it going, it was amazing to have grilled food after so long. 

On the second day we saw a restaurant called “Sunset Grille and Raw Bar” right next to the bridge that you cross coming from Key West driving towards Marathon, where Marvin only wanted “to check out the menu” … 😉 The pictures below are proof of how that went. 

But they had a Pool and games to play, and upper and lower level restaurant area and even sea access, so we find that really cool, even when you’re travelling with children. 

 

Die “Keys” bis runter nach Key West, FL 

Glasklares türkis-blaues Wasser, passend zum Himmel (wenn das Timing stimmt). JETZT sind wir im Urlaub und es fühlt sich an, als wäre man irgendwo ganz anders. Einfach wunderschön! Es war schon in den letzten Tagen warm (bis 28 Grad), was Marvin ziemlich zu schaffen gemacht hat, weshalb er auch derjenige war, der unbedingt ins Wasser wollte. Wenn wir jetzt zurückblicken, hätten wir unsere 3 Tage dort ganz anders gestalten sollen. Am ersten Tag war es wirklich super heiß aber wie man so ist, wir wollten erst einmal alles gesehen haben und schauen wo es am schönsten ist… „Sonntagsmenschen“ eben. 

Als wir fertig damit waren und an einem Strand angekommen sind, der uns zugesagt hat, war es bereits nach 17:00 Uhr und uns war schon gar nicht mehr nach Schwimmen, weil die Sonne weg war und die Luft abgekühlt ist. Auch wenn man davon nichts merkt, ist es eben doch erst Januar und das Wasser hat noch lange keine richtig warmen Temperaturen. 

Wir waren also nicht schwimmen, hatten dafür aber einen wirklich wunderschönen Stellplatz für die Nacht direkt am Wasser, den wir auch noch am zweiten Tag für den halben Tag genutzt haben. Marvin hat dann irgendwann ein Park ausfündig gemacht, indem man zwar Eintritt bezahlt, der aber die schönsten Strände haben soll. Dort sind wir also am zweiten Tag hingefahren und es war tatsächlich schön, aber für mich nichts, was man nicht schon mal gesehen hat. Es gab praktisch zwei Seiten, wovon eine mit Liegen etc. ausgestattet war und dementsprechend voll und die andere Seite hatte keinen breiten Strand, aber man parkte direkt am Strand und musste 1 Meter runter über kleine Felsen und dann zwei Schritte durchs Seegras laufen um im Wasser zu stehen. Für uns also die schönere Option, da auch hier der Tag schon recht weit vorangeschritten war und wir uns nicht mehr großartig in die Sonne legen wollten. Den 3. Tag haben wir dann mehr oder weniger komplett dort verbracht und endlich unsere GRILLSAISON eröffnet. Mit einem Einmalgrill, der überhaupt nicht so wollte wie wir, aber es war sehr lecker. J

Da das Wetter schlecht werden soll, haben wir uns entschieden dann schon nach Miami zu fahren, weil es dort einfach mehr zu sehen und erkunden gibt, als in Key West bei schlechtem Wetter. 😉

The only park that we paid entrance for, and the biggest disappointment. 

For everybody that hasn’t visited the park before, if you do not plan to spend $100 p.P. on a private boat rental and don’t like group tours, it is not worth the visit. 

It is one street that takes you to a visitor center (about an hour drive) called Flamingo, where you can buy food and essential needs (similar to what a gas station has to offer) and buy tickets for whatever you would like to do there. All you can do is rent a boat for yourself (or your group) or join a boat tour, which isn’t so expensive. They told us we would be able to see birds and alligators if we were lucky. Of course, they can never guarantee anything, but honestly, after seeing them in wildlife, we didn’t need to take a boat trip. 

In general, I am usually not the biggest fan of group tours either *haha*. 

On the other hand, I think if you have your own boat (I am not sure if that costs), but that would be fun to explore everything, because you don’t have a time limit or anything. 

Next to taking boat trips, on the one street that you drive there is always tiny streets that are kinda like round trips and allow you to put your boat into the water in several locations or you can go on hikes. Snakes are supposed to be pretty common there too. It is (also due to the wildlife), not pet friendly. I didn’t know what to expect from the Everglades, but it was sure more than that, since it is so well known. 

 

Einer DER Parks schlechthin, wenn man Floridas Touristen immer so hört… Ehrlich gesagt weiß ich nicht warum. Doch irgendwo haben ja auch wir anfangs dort auf Alligatoren gehofft, aber ähnlich wie in dem Okefenokee National Park im Norden von Florida (Süden von Georgia), haben auch die Mitarbeiter gesagt, dass es eher unwahrscheinlich sei jetzt welche zu sehen. Abgesehen davon, sind die Touren auch nicht gerade günstig. Der Park an sich besteht mehr oder weniger nur aus einer Straße, die ab und zu mal Abzweigungen hat, wo man Wanderwege findet oder sein Boot ins Wasser lassen kann. Kurz zur Info: Mit Hund definitiv das flasche Reiseziel! Wenn man also als Tourist dort ankommt, kann man entweder wandern gehen oder Boot fahren. Am Ende der Straße ist eine Art VisitorCenter (Flamingo) zu dem man etwa eine Stunde fährt, sobald man im Park drinnen ist (hier haben wir übrigens das erste malEintritt bezahlt). Ähnlich wie jedes andere auch kann man hier alles mögliche kaufen (ähnlich wie eine Tankstelle) oder ein Boot mieten / eine Tour buchen. 

An Tieren sieht man hauptsächlich Vögel und wenn man Glück hat Alligatoren, sowohl bei einer Tour, als wenn man sich privat ein Boot mietet.

Die Touren haben (zu unserem Zeitpunkt) $35 pro Person gekostet und ein privates Boot (Kayak) $100-$130, was uns definitiv zu teuer war. Wer mich kennt, weiß dass ich kein Freund von Touristen-Touren bin und für das Geld, für das wir eine Boot für uns gehabt hätten, könnten wir auch ein neues kaufen… 😉 Also beides keine Optionen und insgesamt finde ich auch nicht, dass der Everglades National Park besonders spannend ist… 🙂

I feel like it is very unknown, but a MUST SEE if you visit Florida. It is literally just one road (Tamiari TRL E / 41), but it is worth taking. Everybody talks about Alligators and wildlife in Florida, and let me tell you, this is what it is all about! We were just on the way to the Everglades, because we thought it would be super cool. After the Okefenokee National Park, we didn’t really expect to see any Alligators, since they said it wouldn’t be breeding season and they wouldn’t be out. Well as we drove on this road, on the left side was a little river with lots of sea grass and plants on the other side of it. The ride side looked like a typical Mangrove to me. The signs kept on saying Panther crossing?!?!?! 

Back to the topic, at some point there were 2 cars parked, relatively close (on the right side) and on the left side people were just walking around and watching the river. My first instinct was like, “WHY WOULD YOU EVER GET OUT OF THE CAR? That already looks like there could be Alligators?!” … Well about 5 seconds later Marvin saw the first alligator and I saw one right behind that and was like: we need to get out! Stop the car, turn around and let me at least watch. Well we watched (still in the car), but Marvin didn’t like blocking ¼ of the road so he turned around again, to park the car on the ride side and then we crossed the road to be as close to the river as we can, to see the alligators as good as possible… so that’s how that went. 

We ended up stopping a couple times and we really saw huge ones. When you keep on driving there is also a little tourist thing where you can stand on a wooden platform and can see many of them, but I wasn’t sure if they maybe had them locked up somehow or if they were really free, and we ended up not going there. But it was so much cooler, to see them in the wild anyway. What fascinated me the most is that there were all kinds of birds everywhere near them, but they didn’t even bother looking at them. Most of the alligators also just kinda laid in the sun and got a tan from what it looked like, but I just thought they would try and eat birds if they could. Sometimes it was really scary when you only saw the water moving and heard water noises, but usually it was just a bird landing on there… Still, a couple of times where I jumped back. I wasn’t about to get eaten by an alligator…

 

 

Ein “Ort” den wir nicht auf dem Schirm hatten, aber dort müsst ihr gewesen sein, wenn ich nach Florida kommt! Der Ort steht in Anführungszeichen, weil es für uns nur eine Straße war, die „Tamiari TRL E / 41”. Eigentlich eine normale Schnellstraße in Florida. Einspurig, rechts und links Sumpf oder Mangroven Landschaft, relativ viel befahren. So dachten wir zumindest, bis wir Leute gesehen haben, die an der Leitplanke auf der linken Straße standen und ziemlich beschäftigt aussahen. Auch hier waren überall Schilder, die auf Alligatoren oder Panther hingewiesen haben, sodass ich noch gesagt habe, „wie man denn hier aussteigen könne, hier liegen die Tiere doch bestimmt nur so rum, gerade die Alligatoren müssten sich doch hier wohl fühlen…“. Naja, keine 30 Sekunden nachdem wir die Leute am Straßenrand haben stehen sehen, haben wir den ersten Alligator im Wasser gesehen.. gefolgt von einem zweiten, dritten, vierten, fünften, … Ich „STOP! Dreh bitte um ich möchte näher dran“ (So viel zum Thema „wie kann man denn hier aussteigen“ (s.o.)). Soweit so gut, Marvin dreht um und erstmal haben wir uns alles nur aus dem Auto angeschaut bis auch wir nochmals umgedreht haben, weil af der rechten Seite einfach mehr Platz war und uns näher zu Fuß getraut haben. Das war der Wahnsinn! Ich habe noch nie einfach so freie Alligatoren gesehen.. wann und wo auch. Und den Zoo oder irgendwelche Schutzgebiete kann man einfach nicht damit vergleichen! So gab es später die Straße weiter runter auch eine Art Plattform, die am Fuße bestimmt 10 Alligatoren hatte, aber ich denke die waren eingezäunt. 

Zurück zu den freien, ich glaube, dass mich Tiere selten so fasziniert haben. Wenn ich an Alligatoren denke, sind sie nicht nur wild, haben längere Beine als man denkt und gefräßig, sondern futtern auch alles was über ihrer Nase herumschwebt… Die, die dort lagen, waren aber entweder unglaublich vollgefressen und entspannt oder die essen einfach keine Vögel. Teilweise saßen die Vögel direkt daneben oder sogar darauf aber auch das hat die Alligatoren nicht interessiert. Mal war das Wasser total unruhig, sodass man vermuten konnte, dass unterhalb gerade eine Jagd abläuft und teilweise bin ich zusammengezuckt, weil man nur etwas aufs Wasser hat „klatschen“ hören, was aber nur Vögel waren… 

Alles in allem aber ziemlich beindruckend!!!

If you visit these two cities, you have to make sure to take a trip to Sanibel island and the little towns around there as well. I really thought this wasn’t the tourist season, but it turned out to be right the timing for tourists. Sanibel island is SO crowded and we found the most beautiful beaches were the ones right in front of it, but they have amazing beach restaurants / bars, and I love that. Even though I don’t even eat sea food, I just love the atmosphere of it and the music. Most of the time they even have live bands and who doesn’t like a pretty restaurant, that is not too fancy with good food and good music. 

Fort Meyers beach is similar but the total opposite. This seemed to be the Mallorca (Ballermann) of the U.S. Their beaches are way prettier than Sanibel island and the parking situation is more relaxed. Here again, most tourists park their RV somewhere / the car by the hotel and just take bikes or e-cars around the island, which honestly does get you faster from A to B. The water was still pretty cold, and dogs are not allowed on most of the beaches, so we didn’t go for an actual swim. Actually, April did where she could. But she usually also doesn’t care how cold the water is. She is just a “beach-kind-of-dog”. We love it! 

Marvin’s birthday was full of food and we spent it in this area as well. Like I said before, he doesn’t want to anything special, but we both really enjoyed the day.

February 3rd was the big day! …for all of the American Football Fans. It was our first time being out and we thought, okay this is probably a huge deal. We really wanted to experience the American style of celebrating it. Well, let me tell you how this went. We called a couple of restaurants and sports bars, but none of them took a reservation. Cheddar’s, Marvin’s favorite, does show it on their TV’s, but isn’t too known as a place to watch the Super Bowl and they close when they close, no matter how far into the game. 

So we ended up calling Buffalo Wild Wings in Fort Meyers, because I knew the restaurant and I thought it would be a cool atmosphere and Marvin likes their food so it just kind of worked out. Again, they don’t take reservations, but the guy on the phone told me they are known for Sunday games and usallyhave too many people in there, so many will also just stand, because they don’t have any more tables. He also said to get there as early as possible and when I asked him for an approximate time he said, they would have people sitting there with them all day long. So I thought okay, that kinda does sound like us, let’s get there early. Marvin already thought it is stupid that we walked in the restaurant as the second party, just to give you an impression. Anyways we sat down and told our waitress right away we would be here all day, which is why we won’t order too much food all at once. She was really nice and very understanding… Well, the day goes on and the people come … and LEAVE. You know, until 3 pm or so I thought maybe theyjust throw their own party, but at like 5 pm I was like, how in the world are we the only people waiting here all day?! Well, when the game was over, and we asked for the bill, our waitress asked us why we would sit here all day and when we told her that’s what we got told, that it would be really crowded and everything she was like “We’re never that crowded. There’s too many sports bars around.” … So, thank you to the guy, that told us we had to be there all day. The positive side is though, I read my book and worked quiet a lot, which was super, because it almost felt like an office.

Cape Coral, FL und Fort Meyers, FL 

Wenn diese beiden Städte nicht die höchste Bevölkerungsdichte an Tennis- und Golfspielern haben, weiß ich auch nicht. 😀

Neben den beiden Städten gibt es aber auch noch Sanibel Island, was zwar ziemlich „touri-überlaufen“ ist, aber alles in allem sehr schön. Viele kleine du große Strand Cafés, natürlich auch einige Meeresfrüchte Restaurants, bei dem eines bekannter für irgendwas sein soll als das andere… wie das eben so ist. 😉 Es ist aktuell aber anscheinend auch die Hauptreisezeit für die Orte, von daher liegt der Touristenüberfluss vielleicht auch einfach nur an unserem Zeitmanagement. Auch sehr schön ist, dass es super viele Fahrrad, Roller, E—Bike (und alles was dazugehört) Vermietstationen gibt, sonst würde der Verkehr auf der Insel vermutlich gar nicht laufen. Die meisten Strände sind abgedeckt von Resorts was bedeutet, dass es nicht umsonst ist, aber wenn man direkt nach der Brücke an die Strände fährt, kann man relativ ruhig Zeit am Wasser genießen, oder dort schwimmen gehen. Dafür war es uns aber noch viiiiiiel zu kalt. Marvin war zwar fest davon überzeugt, dass es ihm nicht zu kalt ist, aber das Schwimmen und nass sein, hat April dann doch für sich alleine genossen. 

Am 01. Februar haben wir Marvins Geburtstag total entspannt und für ihn mit ganz viel Essen verbracht, was auch total schön war. 

Viel größer wollten wir eigentlich den SUPER BOWL verbringen, was hier in Amerika ja bekanntlich ein riesen Event ist. Als Vorbereitung haben wir alle möglichen Restaurants angerufen, aber da jedes irgendwie voll wird, nehmen sie auch keine Reservierungen für den Tag mehr an. „Cheddar’s“, Marvins Lieblingsrestaurant, schließt auch zu den normalen Zeiten und war somit raus. Als wir bei Buffalo Wild Wings(einer Sportsbar) angerufen haben, wurde uns gesagt, dass sie jeden Sonntag / Spieltag voll besetzt sind und oft auch „Stehplätze“ vergeben, weil einfach nicht genug Tische da sind. Der freundliche Mann am Telefon sagte noch zu mir „Kommt so früh wie möglich, Wir haben Leute, die sitzen den ganzen Tag bei uns nur um abends das Spiel zu schauen“. Damit war für uns dann irgendwie klar, dass wir auch von der Partie sind, die Sportshow im Vorfeld ist bestimmt spannend und wenn sie so voll sind, MUSS die Stimmung ja eigentlich gut sein. Nun gut, wir stehen um 10:00 Uhr morgens also bereits auf dem Parkplatz um ja mit bei den ersten dabei zu sein. Um 11:06 Uhr sind wir dann in Restaurant rein (wohlbemerkt als Dritte, was Marvin schon „zu spät“ war). AM vorherigen Abend haben wir uns übrigens schon den perfekten Tisch herausgesucht, damit auch ja keinen steifen Nacken bekommen … bei über 20 Fernsehern. Wir haben auch die Kellnerin gleich zu Beginn informiert, dass wir unser Essen nach und nach bestellen, weil wir eben den ganzen Tag hier sind, was für sie auch noch nicht überraschend klang… Als ihre Schicht zu Ende war wurden wir einfach von der nächsten Kellnerin übernommen… so verging also der Tag… Stunde für Stunde. Ich hatte mir einiges vorgenommen zu schaffen und habe unseren Tisch mehr als Schreibtisch als alles andere benutzt, aber das hat total gut gepasst. 

Um 15:00 Uhr wurde ich dann irgendwann stutzig warum denn alle Gäste kommen aber eben auch wieder GEHEN und nicht bleiben. Aber vielleicht haben sie auch einfach private Partys und essen hier nur zu Mittag, kann ja sein. Um 17:00 Uhr habe ich nochmal geschaut ob heute auch wirklich der SUPERBOWL stattfinden sollte, weil es immer noch keine Gäste gab, die vorhatten zu bleiben. Das Spiel sollte um 18:30 Uhr beginnen… wo sind die Leute, die auch den ganzen Tag hier verbringen? Naja, ist auch egal, die Stimmung ist bestimmt super während dem Spiel und vielleicht ist es dieses Jahr eben anders. Offensichtlich erweise… Eine halbe Stunde vor Spielbeginn trudelten dann so langsam „Fans“ von beiden Teams ein, die aber nicht mal halb so ambitioniert waren, wie ich mir da vorgestellt hatte. Bei der Hymne ist keiner aufgestanden (was hier sonst immer der Fall ist) und es wurde auch nicht gespannt das Spiel verfolgt oder großartig gejubelt (auch wenn sich diese Momente so oder so in Grenzen gehalten hätten), sondern es lief einfach so neben her der Superbowl… Im dritten Viertel haben wir sogar überlegt frühzeitig zu gehen, weil auch damit wären wir nicht die einzigen gewesen. Im Übrigen waren selbst zur Spielzeit noch nicht mal ansatzweise alle Tische belegt… ein ziemlicher Reinfall also. Nach dem Spiel hat die Bedienungdann auch wirklich noch unglaublich lange für die Rechnung gebraucht, obwohl sie nur 3 Tische abzurechnen hatte und zum Abschluss fragte sie uns „Und ihr habt jetzt den ganzen Tag hier gesessen?!“, als wir das bestätigt und ihr erklärt haben wie das kam, schaute sie schräg und sagte „Voll? Wir? Nein dafür gibt es zu viele Sportsbars in der Umgebung…“ 

Jetzt wisst ihr also, wie unser SUPERBOWL verlaufen ist 😉 

Wenn wir das Positive daraus ziehen, habe ich wirklich eine Menge geschafft. 😉

Tampa is one of the cities, that I was super excited to see back in 2014, when it was my first time in Florida and also was super disappointed. Going there again was just like visiting “any other” city in the U.S. that has nothing special to offer as I said before. There is just not much do to there. What they do have though is a river where it is common for people to go kayaking or canoeing, but when we were there I think it was just too cold for that. They also have a park right by and a couple restaurants, so I could imagine that you can have a good time there in the summer. Maybe, it is not the cities, just the timing that is not right for us… 😉 

Saint Petersburg is pretty close to Tampa, but covers more or less the whole corner of land that reaches into the water. Tampa Bay is right there and you can cross it by driving over a huge bridge, which offers you a great sunset ride if you want to.

Tampa war 2014 eine der Städte, auf die ich mich super dollegefreut und viel von versprochen habe, aber letztendlich war es total der Reinfall. So ungefähr ging es Marvin jetzt. 😉 Was Tampa aber hat ist ein Fluss, auf dem im Sommer wohl relativ viel und häufig Kanu / Kayak (ich kenne den Unterschied immer noch nicht) gefahren wird. Dieser schließt direkt an einen Park, in dem man es sich im Sommer wirklich schön gemütlich machen kann. Ansonsten hat die Stadt in meinen Augen nicht viel zu bieten, aber wer weiß vielleicht ist es auch einfach die falsche Jahreszeit. 😉 

Saint Petersburg ist relativ nah an Tampa und deckt mehr oder weniger die ganze Landzunge ab, die durch Tampa Bay mit dem eigentlichen Landstück verbunden wird. Hier kann man eine lange Brücke mit dem Auto überqueren und einen wunderschönen Sonnenuntergang während der Fahrt genießen.

Getting to Florida was honestly pretty exciting. It feels like the final destination, that we reached and from here on we really just have all the time we want. Marvin’s birthday is coming up and he doesn’t want to do anything special, so we will spend it traveling and looking at things, just like any other day. Jacksonville was pretty cute and we loved seeing the sea or the first time in so long. It is nothing compared to the sea views you get in California and it is just beautiful. It almost tells you to jump in *haha*.

From Jacksonville on we took the A1A up to New Smyrna Beach, where we got to spend the night right by the sea, which was very peaceful and quiet. 

From that time on we started driving through the center of Florida, visiting Orlando first. Marvin has never seen Universal, and was super excited to see that. I was more excited about the rollercoasters, but since Marvin is not the biggest fan of such things and the weather wasn’t too beautiful we didn’t spend money to visit each park. 

The followers who know me, also know, that I used to do Cheerleading and made it to the competition in Orlando in 2014, so this all honestly felt like a huge throwback. I was so excited! I still remember to this day, what it feels like to take a step on the mat. 

This is one of the main reasons why we also drove to Disney and the ESPN center. Of course, just for the pictures. 😉 

Jacksonville, FL bis Orlando, FL

Nach Florida reinzufahren war irgendwie aufregend. Es war ein Staat, den ich schon kannte und alle Erinnerungen von der Cheerleading Meisterschaft aus 2014 waren sofort wieder da. Marvins Geburtstag ist auch bald und eigentlich hatten wir damit gerechnet den maximal in New Orleans und nicht schon in Miami zu verbringen. 😉 

In Jacksonville, FL konnten wir seit langem mal wieder das Meer sehen. Das letzte Mal war, das in Kalifornien und die Westküste ist nicht zu vergleichen mit der Ostküste. Von dort an haben wir uns eigentlich nur noch auf Baden gefreut. Warmes Wasser, Sandstrände, … 

Wenn man von Jacksonville Richtung Süden fährt und die A1A nimmt, kann man die ganze Zeit am Wasser entlangfahren und in Smyrna Beach besteht sogar die Möglichkeit direkt am Wasser zu übernachten. Es gibt keinen Strand dort und man müsste über das Gebüsch springen (rein bildlich ;-)) aber man steht sehr ruhig und öffentliche Toiletten sind auch vorhanden. Also eigentlich perfekt für einen Zwischenstopp bei Nacht. 

Am nächsten Morgen sind wir dann nach Orlando gefahren und für Marvin waren die Universal Studios das aufregendste. Da ich mich nicht für Filme interessiere hat mich das jetzt genauso wenig wie in 2014 interessiert, aber ich fand den Blick auf die Achterbahnen toll… bis man die Preise sieht und das ist schon der Wahnsinn. 😉 Vor allem wenn nur ich gerne Achterbahn fahre. 😀 

Das schönste an Orlando war eigentlich durch den Disney „Torbogen“ zu fahren und zum ESPN Center, weil dort unglaublich viele Erinnerungen dranhängen. Einfach schön, wieder dort zu sein!

People will be like “you really just passed through” and I would have to say “Yes we did” to that. Honestly, we had a couple places and cities on our list here, but they were – again, so American, that we didn’t feel the need to stay there very long. Starting out with Jackson, where we actually have a story to tell on the “Lifestyle” site, it didn’t seem like there was ANY life at all. 

 

Sweet home Alabama… Birmingham and Montgomery were on our list, but we ended up only visiting Birmingham. Driving in there, everything was dead. It reminded me of how different the American culture is to the German one, in EVERY way. 

If you shut down your restaurant / gas station or whatever it might be, it will still be there in 10 years. But if you have anything SPORTY to offer, it will look like it was just built. There were so many fast food restaurants that still had their signs up and offers hanging outside from who knows when. It was definitely a while back. At some places you won’t even noticed they are closed until you try to open their door. Isn’t that crazy (to us, Germans)?! In Germany you would take everything down and probably leave the building behind spotless. Here it just seems like you move out but leave everything behind. So, after that experience, we googled Montgomery again but decided not to drive out all the way there. It does look more exciting, but not appealing to us. 

 

What a great timing! For everybody that follows the American football just a little bit knows, that the SUPER BOWL is THE ONE EVENT, that (almost) everybody here gets super excited about. The timing was just right for us to visit Alabama shortly before the Super Bowl, to get to see all of the fun stuff, with not too many people. The city was, at least around the stadium), alive. Food trucks were set up, a huge wheel, the buildings had posters all over them and everybody just seemed to be so ready for the big event, that they get to host. 

 

P.s. Next to all the fun stuff, there wasn’t too much going on either, besides railroad tracks, that will break your car if you don’t pass them with 3mph (5km/h).

 

Last but not least we visited the Okefenokee National Park. Again, we only drove to the Visitor Center and decided not to do any tours. First off, it was too hot to leave the dog in the car, at a place where we can’t have the windows open. Everybody that knows about the wildlife in Florida, knows what kind of animals they have in the Okefenokee National Park, and the dog wasn’t allowed anywhere outside the car. Which is a good thing. 

Secondly, I was only excited about seeing Alligators in the wildlife, which means you book a boat tour, but they told us that it is not the time for them to be out. Of course, you can always happen to see one, but that would be rare around this time of the year. The end of March through the beginning of April is their breeding time and they will be out a lot more. 

You can still book boat and land tours with them and see Alligators and turtles behind glass, but I’ve seen that before (in South Africa) and Marvin agreed, that it wouldn’t be worth it, if we don’t get to see them wild. 

It was still super cool, to drive on a road there everything is super wet on the side of the road and you could see an alligator every moment. 

 

Auch an dieser Stelle, muss ich nochmal sagen, das es stimmt, dass wir hier wirklich „nur durchgefahren“ sind, aber für uns gab es nichts was uns davon abgehalten hat, wie ihr selber gleich lest. 😉 

Jackson haben wir als erstes gesehen, wo es tatsächlich eine Story zu erzählen gibt, das mache ich aber in dem Reiter „Lifestyle“ 😉 … ansonsten sehr ruhig die Stadt und es gibt nicht viel zu besichtigen. 

In Alabama wollten wir ursprünglich Montgomery und Birmingham sehen. Nachdem wir aber von Jackson, Mississippi und Birmingham, Alabama so enttäuscht waren, haben wir uns Montgomery nochmal online angeschaut und uns dagegen entschieden. Im Nachhinein ist es dort wahrscheinlich spannender als in Birmingham, aber das war uns die Fahrt dorthin einfach nicht wert. (Ich weiß nicht warum ich so klinge als müsse ich mich rechtfertigen, aber das ist keine Absicht. :-D). 

Birmingham hat mich daran erinnert, dass der generelle Lebensstil und alles der Amerikaner so stark abweicht von dem Deutschen, dass man es gar nicht übersehen kann. Birmingham war hauptsächlich eine „Einkauffstraße“. Wenn ich von der Einkaufsstraße spreche meine ich eine Straße die an Autohäusern, Werkstätten und Essensläden, eventuell auch Supermärkten entlangführt. Wie dem auch sei, wenn in Deutschland ein Laden schließt, wird dieses leergeräumt und ich würde mal behaupten, ordentlich verlassen. Wenn in Birmingham ein Laden schließt, werden Chef und Mitarbeiter eingepackt, alles Stehen und Liegen gelassen und man sucht sich eine neue Arbeitstelle… ? Es gab tatsächlich Läden (hauptsächlich Fastfood Restaurants), denen es nicht anzusehen war, dass sie geschlossen war, bis man die Tür öffnen wollte. Wenn man Glück hatte stand ein Schild dran, aber in der Regel nicht. Die Plakate und Inserate von dem Zeitpunkt als es noch offen war hingen auch da noch dran. Ganz egal ob es erst vor kurzem geschlossen hat, oder schon 10 Jahre nicht mehr geöffnet wurde. Genauso ist das auch mit Werkstätten oder Auto An- und Verkaufsgeschäften. Die Autos stehen immer noch dort rum, Preisschilder hängen dran, und und und… werden aber nicht mehr verkauft. Alles in allem, also ein sehr komischer Eindruck. 

Sportstätte dagegen, in USA also meist ein Stadion, sehen aus wie neu. Rund herum ist nichts, aber das scheint einfach einmalig für die USA zu sein, dass selbst wenn für nichts mehr Geld da ist, der Sport wird nicht vernachlässigt. Das ist einfach etwas ganz anderes in Deutschland! 

Als wir nach Georgia wollten, hatten wir uns Atlanta fest vorgenommen. Wenn ich den Namen häre war ich hier schon gefühlt 3x, aber eigentlich nur am Flughafen, weil ich hier am Anfang der Reise immer die Zwischenstopps hatte. 😉 

In Atlanta waren wir wirklich einfach zur richtigen Zeit am richtigen Ort. Wer „American Football“ etwas verfolgt, weiß dass am kommenden Wochenende DAS EVENT des Jahres steigt und diesmal in Atlanta, Georgia ausgerichtet wird. DER SUPER BOWL. Man merkt der Stadt richtig an, dass die Menschen sich freuen, alles wird vorbereitet, die Straßen werden umgeleitet, die Stadt ist voller Leute, ein Riesenrad ist aufgebaut, die Gebäude sind geschmückt, jeder ist gespannt… Das war einfach mal schön die Vorbereitung von so einem Event live miterleben zu können. Ansonsten scheint Atlanta aber recht ruhig zu sein… auch wenn der Flughafen, als der „geschäftigste“ weltweit gilt. 

 

Dann war es auch schon soweit und wir sind Richtung Okefenokee National Park gefahren, der Georgia und Florida mehr oder weniger verbindet. Das war irgendwie eine ganz andere Erfahrung als alle anderen Nationalparks zuvor. Abgesehen davon, dass wir hier erstmals super heiße Temperaturen hatten, gab es auch zum ersten Mal Warnschilder vor Alligatoren. Eine komplett neue „Welt“. Wenn man von der Hauptstraße zum Visitor Center des Nationalparks fährt, verläuft die Straße eigentlich immer nur gerade und rechts und links kann man regelrecht in Sumpfgebiete schauen. Alles ist wässrig, Seegras und Bäume streiten sich darum wer mehr Platz einnehmen darf. Es ist super bewachsen und man hat wirklich keine Ahnung ob da nicht vielleicht gleich ein Alligator rauskommt, denn die Schilder deuten ja darauf hin. Auch Hunde dürfen das Auto nicht mehr verlassen und Kinder sollten sowieso zu jeder Zeit beaufsichtigt sein. Angekommen am Visitor Center haben wir uns mal informiert was eine Tour kostet, denn Alligatoren in freier Wildbahn hätten schon was. Die Dame hat uns aber darauf hingewiesen, dass die Brutzeit erst Ende März / Anfang April ist und es jetzt relativ unwahrscheinlich ist, dass man die Tiere sieht. Die Tour kann man trotzdem machen, schließlich können sie nie für irgendwas garantieren, aber wenn man unbedingt Alligatoren sehen möchte, ist es besser sich nicht darauf einzustellen sie frei zu sehen. Kleinere Alligatoren kann man neben Schildkröten auch hinter Glas in einem anderen Teil des Resorts sehen. Das hat uns aber nicht wirklich beeindruckt und da es super heiß war, wollten wir April auch nicht für Stunden im Auto lassen. Also haben wir uns darauf eingestellt die Alligatoren mit Glück im Everglades Nationalpark zu sehen… Es ging also weiter Richtung Jacksonville, Florida.

First off, I want to say, that on the way to Louisiana and on the way out, we had SO MANY people stopping us or saying a quick “hi” on the highway, which we really enjoyed! I hope that all of you get back in touch with us, because we couldn’t give you anything or let you write in our book, since we were on the highway. Speaking about that, if you happen to meet us, please ask us to have you write in our book. It is a book, that I bought in Wichita, Kansas, when I was still with my mom and I wanted to give everybody the chance to write in it, but I keep forgetting about it, which is uugh. Plus, we are always super happy to meet locals or other tourists / over landers!

Driving into Louisiana is such a cool experience! There are so many places where you feel like you’re in France and they even have French signs. Even though I have no clue about the French language, it reminded me so much of my childhood, because we went camping in France so many times and each one was special. We made so many memories on that one specific campground and met so many amazing people there, who turned into friends. 

Back to Louisiana, the two main cities, that we wanted to see were Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Baton Rouge wasn’t too exciting. Their Saint Joseph Cathedral is definitely one to remember, but other than that it is just a cute city. 

New Orleans though, let me tell you, is SO AMAZING! Many street performers of every kind. Art, music, dance, gymnastics, show, magic, … There is just so much! When you get to the city limit it might not seem like anything special, but once you drive or walk the direction of the Lombardi Street, it is non-comparable to any other city, we’ve seen here before. The whole city is in a good mood, even children are using buckets and sticks as drums and people are dressed up, going in and out of bars and restaurants. A couple restaurants even have balconies where you can sit outside, which I have never seen here in the U.S. before. It is a city that stays up later, also due to tourists, but it is just a very positive atmosphere. No matter if you walk right by the river or downtown, you will always have the sound of music in your ears. They have little gift shops and clothing stores all over the place and you might even feel like you’re in France, not even joking. The Jackson Square also shows a beautiful church right behind a beautiful garden, which was a really peaceful place for me. 

WE definitely enjoyed New Orleans and it is my personal favorite city out of the U.S. so far. 

Louisiana in USA oder doch Frankreich?

Zuerst mal möchte ich loswerden, dass Louisiana – mit Abstand – die freundlichsten und offensten Autofahrer hat! Wir wurden selten so oft begrüßt oder haben versucht durch das offene Fenster auf der Autobahn zu kommunizieren. 😉

Der Titel lässt schon vermuten, dass man sich in Louisiana manchmal wie in Frnakreich vorkommt, denn genau so ist es. Stellenweise sind sogar die Beschilderungen in französisch und wenn die Menschen auch französisch sprechen würden, bestünde vermutlich stellenweise wirklich Verwechslungsgefahr. Baton Rouge und New Orleans waren die zwei Hauptpunkte, die wir angefahren sind. Baton Rouge fanden wir nicht allzu spannend, aber New Orleans war einfach wunderschön. Wirklich nicht vergleichbar mit irgendeinem anderen Ort hier. Die Menschen sind auf den Straßen, die überfüllt sind mit Autos und Fußgängern, man hat kleine Gassendurch die man durchschlendern kann, die Gebäude sind teilweise alt, Kinder machen mit Eimern und Stöcken Musik, es gibt Straßenmusiker, -künstler und -artisten. Viele „Urlaubsläden“ mit Souvenirs und anderen Dingen, die man aus dem Urlaub gerne mitbringt, Restaurants (teilweise sogar im 2. Stock mit Balkon), Irische Pubs, Eisdielen, Klamottengeschäften, und und und… Auch große Klamottenketten finden sich hier ein, sodass es eine bunt gemischte Stadt ist. Die Züge fahren mitten durch die Stadt und trennt die Flusspromenade von der Innenstadt ab. An der Promenade wird Schmuck o.ä. verkauft und auch hier sitzen Musiker, die man mit Kleingeld glücklich machen kann. 

Einen kleinen botanischen Garten findet man auch, der direkt vor einer Kirche liegt. 

New Orleans war definitive eine unserer Lieblingsstädte hier in den USA, weil man einfach herumschlendern konnte und sich das aussteigen richtig gelohnt hat.
